April 20, 2010

Today was another sad email we had to send to Jason as we learned last night that Joe's dad passed away unexpectedly. So today was spent chatting with him about that, but here is the news from the mission field....

Wow. That must be hard for everyone. . . . I'm praying for their family, and I hope everything goes well. I don't really know what to say, other than please keep me updated, as usual. I'm really greatful for God's plan for His families. I've talked to some really stubborn people out here, and I'll say something like "our message is that families can be together forever" and some respond with a quick "no they can't." What a sad view of eternity that must be. Elder Holland once said Heaven would not be Heaven without my family. Luckily God understands that, and has a plan to make heaven a real heaven.
Glad your doing good, Joe. From all three emails I've gotten from you, you're a'ight. :-) Ask Kassie, that's a good thing.

Hey family!

Again a lot has happened out there. Again, I'm praying for everyone.

This last week has been a great blessing for our area. Our mission president asked us to focus on teaching lessons to investigators with a member present this week. Wow is that hard to do. There are three things that make that difficult 1) we have to have appointments set up with everyone in advance 2) we have to find someone to come with us 3) the investigator has to actually show up for the appointment.

Usually we do okay with that, but the past couple of weeks we've been struggling. In fact, just teaching investigators has been really hard. I spent a lot of time praying for help in meeting that goal. By some miracle, we managed to get a lot of appointments set up. Yay! And we managed to find a lot a members who were available for lessons! Yay! And, best of all, almost all of our lessons went through. What an amazing week it's been. I can't remember the last time I taught so many lessons in a week. It really was amazing.

And, on top of that, we found some great new people to teach. We didn't find any of them ourselves, so they are obviously a blessing and a miracle.

One is the father of Josh, a 13 year old that we have been teaching for a few weeks. Jason, his father, noticed the change in his son and finally contacted us and ask us to come over and meet with him. He came to church on Sunday and really loved it.

Another is a really nice family where his dad is a member but doesn't come to church, the wife is not a member and wasn't very interested in the church, and the kids really love church and want to be baptized. The parents finally gave in and let us come over and talk with the kids to answer some of their questions. Well, the kids turned out to be kind of quiet. But the mom started asking a lot of great questions. They are a really great family.

We've also been getting a TON of referrals from the Easter Pageant. We have a lot to contact, so we'll have to get on that. :-) Our area is really being blessed all of a sudden. Work seems to come and go in waves-- it would be nice if it just kept rapidly going up, and stopped dropping every once in a while. But then I probably wouldn't appreciate these times a wonderful chaos.

Do you remember Shawn and Michelle? Shawn needed to quit smoking to prepare for his baptism on the 1st of May. He had to quit smoking be Saturday. Well, he had been trying and trying, and Saturday came and he still hadn't quit, and then he hurt his knee, and some other medical problems (nothing major) have popped up. Some would say that it's a terrible thing, but I feel that it's a blessing in disguise. He hasn't been able to smoke since his quit smoking day, even if he wanted to. Go figure. Heavenly Father is brilliant. And Shawn is doing good.

Anyway, that's about is for this week.

Lots of love from Oh-No (AZ), and I pray for you all as well.
Jason

and here is a family picture we sent to Jason....

Thank you for sending that picture. That one really means a lot to me. Thanks.

April 13, 2010

Obviously Jason got online the second the library opened this morning as he knew there was suppose to be news and pictures of a new nephew. And he was right. Tons of pictures and information were waiting for him. You can tell by his letter that he is a little shocked and over whelmed. Enjoy!

I'M ON LOOKING AT PICKS OF JASON XIII

Yay! I have a little nephew now! Or a big nephew now. I'm not a fan of the nickname big mac, though, even if it is CAM backwards. lol. Who like MickyDees anyway?

Start teaching him to walk so he'll be ready to kick when I get back. Thanks for the emails and pics. I still expect many more.

But wait!

What do you mean that's his final name? What happened to Jason XIII Nathan IV Barnard? I thought we all agreed on that. Fine! I'll go with it. But I'm still calling him Jason jr.

Hi Jason,

It's great to be a Grandpa, how is it being an Uncle for the first time?

Dad
-------------------
Wonderful. Can't wait to see the baby boy. :-) (Five months-- not to be trunky, but under the circumstances I think some trunky-ness is acceptable.)
---------------------------
He should be walking by next week, probably running the week after that.
Maybe flying jump side kicks the week after that, we don't want to rush Camren to much yet, lets break him into Taekwondo slowly.
You can start the nun chuck training when you get home.
Dad
---------------------
That's the spirit dad!

And Kellie-- so what if he can't count that high. I can barely count that high, but it's okay. Dora can teach him-- in English AND spanish!

(weekly email)
Hey family!

I can't think well enough to actually send a decent email, so you'll have to deal with the few jumbled thoughts that come out.

We actually did have a great week, but nothing as exciting as yours.

Our mission did great with talking to people. If you remember from my last email, our mission was working on that. And we saw a lot of miracles. the goal was 20 per comp. per day, and we had an average of 19 a day-- soooooo close! Elder Coltrin and I are especially happy with our efforts this past week. We talked to as many people as was humanly possible for us-- 257 people.

We also saw some great blessings come from that. We've been blessed with many new people to teach and they are doing great again. Our night tonight will be crazy with appointments-- we have to do an exchange to go to all of them. We haven't seen that in our area in a while.

Sister Porter, for example, mentioned that she had a friend who could use a visit. I didn't think much of it, but I asked about the friend and got the information from her. When we went by, we thought she was a member-- she had a stack of church books on her table. Everything from Gospel Principles to Preparing to enter the Holy Temple. Turns out that she has a nephew that is a member and he has been telling her about the church. We had a really great conversation with her. Her name is Amy, by the way.

And we've seen a lot of other things happen that just have to be blessings, because even in missionary work this stuff doesn't happen often.

I'll tell you more about the specifics later on, but it's really been great.

Love you all!

Sorry family! But I've got to get going. It's that time again.

Oh, BTW do you know a Gary Ray @ 4318 Egret Dr., Seabrook TX? He's related to someone out here. Is he in the ward?

April 7, 2010

Hey family!

Still no baby, huh? . . . . You do realize that I can't wait forever, right? lol. And still nothing from BYU-I, huh? Maybe they're playing hard to get. Kaydee should send them some chocolate or something. lol. :-D Well, anyway. How is everything going? Good I hope.

First of all, I got to work at the Easter Pageant this last week on Thursday and Saturday night. That was a lot of fun. As missionaries we walk around and talk to people, just like at the Christmas lights. Although this can be a lot more akward because people are sitting down, so people on the ends of rows get talked to a lot, and people in the middle don't unless a missionary wants to climb over tons of people to get there. And it's usually really crowded. There are usually 10 to 20 thousand people that attend, with the record being higher than that. Anyway, it was a lot of fun. I found a few people that were interested in meeting with missionaries, including a guy who spoke only Spanish. Don't ask me how I did it, but I managed to get his information for Spanish speaking missionaries to come by. I WISH I SPOKE SPANISH!

Conference was amazing. And funny. There were some good jokes, especially in Elder Hollands talk. "You wouldn't invite a burglar into your house, serve him tea and crumpets, and then show him where the silverware is. . . . You shouldn't be serving tea anyway. . . " And, as always, there were some GREAT insights. It seemed like the main theme was strengthening the family. Isn't it strange how all of the talks blend together so well when no one is assigned a topic and they don't coordinate their topics either? They all just speak as they feel inspired and all of the talks just blend together beautifully as Heavenly Father speaks to us through them and the spirit that touches our hearts as they speak.

Now, if you're observant you'll notice that I said that we were at the Pageant Saturday night. . . . That is during Priesthood session. I was distraught when I found out that we would be missing it! Priesthood session is the best session! I love it so much. But someone had to go to the Pageant. Well, luckily for us, they re-broadcast it for those who participated in the Pageant at 3:30 the next day-- just after the Sunday afternoon session of Conference. So I got to watch it. The funny thing is, that is when the Earth quake hit. We didn't feel anything, but it knocked out the Satellite for a few minutes. . . . I guess a few people-- including our mission president-- felt it. I didn't find out about it until the next day, though. lol. I'm slow to get news.

And we had Zone conference yesterday. Those are always good. That's also the reason why I am getting on Wednesday rather than Tuesday. We focused a lot on unity, which I suspect is partially in preparation for the new mission president coming in July.

Also the mission is focusing on talking to more people. Each companionship is suppose to talk to 140 people a week as we go to/from appointments. That's not a problem for us, but a lot a missionaries don't do it, so they are having us call in every night with how many people we've talked to. So far, in two days Elder Coltrin and I have talked with 91 people. :-)

Our drought with new investigators has finally ended as well! We found a few more this last week thanks to referrals from members and the Easter Pageant. Life is great!

And, best of all, we had a wedding in our area last night. Yes, you read that right. There was a wedding. We had two people that have been living together for twelve years that want to get baptized. They know that they have to be living the standards that Christ taught in order to be ready to make that covenant with God, and so last night they finally tied the knot and were married by the bishop in a very small but beautiful service. It was really neat to be a part of that. There will probably never be another time in my life when I'll get to be a part of all of these things again. Shawn, the newly married man, will be baptized May 1st, and Michelle, his wife, will be baptized shortly after. (I told you about them a while back, but I misspelled his name, in case you are confused. . . . )

Oh, Great news! I actually gained like five pounds so far in the 19 months I've been out! :-(

Yup. It's been really good so far. The work is constantly moving faster and faster, and it's all I can do to keep up! I remember when I first got in the mission, to have 70 baptisms in a transfer was impossible! Now, at the end of last transfer we had 132 baptisms, and everyone was disappointed because that is really low now. We are really being blessed with miracles, and the missionaries that are coming out of the MTC now are way better than the ones that were coming out with me. It's amazing to watch the work progress.

My easter was good. Mostly I was watching conference. One of our Ward Mission Leaders invited us over to his home for dinner. That was really nice. They are a great family!Yup, I got the pacakge! Thank you BTW

Well, I've got to go. I love you all and I hope your next week goes good. I look forward to baby pictures! Keep me posted! I really want to know the second he's born!

Love you all,

PS... I just wanted to point out that my favorite-oldest-sister Kassie hasn't written to her favorite younger brother in a while. . . . Not to point fingers >>> or mention Kassie's name. . . . . lol.
